A 65‑million‑year‑old Triceratops skeleton stands as a prehistoric titan — a three‑horned, frilled behemoth that roamed North America before the asteroid strike. Imagine a rhinoceros or elephant in armor — but with three horns, a parrot‑like beak, and a frill like a medieval knight’s shield. This skeleton is more than a fossil — it’s a prehistoric blueprint of survival, defense, and evolution.
The Triceratops were herbivorous grazers in western North America during the Late Cretaceous Period, approximately 68-66 million years ago. It's important to highlight its role as a defensive specialist — using horns and frill to deter predators like T‑Rex.
With regards to the actual unique skeletal design, the skull features the massive, parrot‑like beak at the front, the large brow horns over the eyes (sometimes over 3 feet long), and the smaller nasal horn on the snout, all part of the iconic “three horns.” The large bony shield behind the skull, or, the frill, protected the neck and may have played a role in display or defense.
The body of the Triceratops was extraordinary- a robust, tank-like build -estimated 6-12 tons-with sturdy legs and a powerful frame built for charging and defense. Other features also stand out like the toothless rostral bone for cropping tough vegetation.
This skeletal piece is made of polyresin and stands firmly on a mound with a felt lined underside.
